About

Xander Weaver-Scull was born and raised in the San Geronimo Valley, CA. He is a social/environmental/climate justice awareness artist. The majority of his recent work portrays threatened, endangered and recovered species. He is passionate about creating this work because most species do not have the ability to speak on their own behalf. Nearly one in five reptiles, one in four mammals, and one in three amphibians are threatened with extinction. He tries to create inspiring artwork that is not didactic.

He is currently in the midst of writing and illustrating a children’s book about endangered and threatened species that have recovered. Its purpose is to educate children about what is happening on our planet without terrifying them.

In 2012, he graduated from Hampshire College. His thesis was entitled “How to Use Art For Environmental and Social Justice Messaging” and included three major artistic components. First was a series of eight, freehand drawn and cut stencils of endangered species from California that were used to create a 22” x 32’ long accordion book. Second, he then took these stencils back to California and explored alternative means of applying his stencils without using spray-paint. Third, he wrote and illustrated a children’s book titled,“ Where Is Away?”  The book explores the concept of throwing something “away” and what that really means.
